Work Participation Issues for Single Parents

About the Project

The Project has facilitated virtual and group networking between single parents to inform each other and to exchange successful strategies to engage in work and education opportunities. The project has been developed from a peer education model which assumes that single parents are experts on surviving as single parents and together hold much wisdom about balancing family demands and work and education and training needs.

The project included the conduct of a solomothers email discussion list, focus groups on workforce participation issues and a small quantitative survey to assess perceived barriers and useful supports. This report aims to provide an overview of single mothers' working strategies and useful internet resources assisting participation in the paid workforce. It aims to provide single parents, service providers and policymakers with insights and strategies around the difficult task of one person meeting family and workplace and personal needs.

The National Council of Single Mothers and their Children gratefully acknowledges the funding support of the National Women's
Non-Government Organisation's Funding Programme, by the Office of the Status of Women, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
